Konjac fiber

Konjac Fiber in Trimoryn: 50 mg of Glucomannan, Water and Choking Safety

Quick answer

Konjac fiber, 90 percent glucomannan, is 50 mg of each Trimoryn capsule. It is the best-researched line for fullness, yet NIH says it has little to no effect on weight loss. Pooled trials range from -0.22 kg, not significant, to -1.27 kg. It swells with water, and blockages are reported when taken with too little, so use a full glass.

The ingredient01

What is konjac fiber (glucomannan)?

Konjac is a root vegetable grown in Asia, and glucomannan is the thick, gel-forming fiber that makes up most of its flour.

The label says "Konjac Fiber (90% Glucomannan)". Glucomannan holds large amounts of water, forming a thick gel that moves slowly through the gut. That is why it appears in shirataki noodles and in fullness products. The same property is why the fiber needs water and care.

Dose02

How much konjac fiber (glucomannan) is in one Trimoryn capsule?

One capsule holds 50 mg of konjac fiber, so about 45 mg of glucomannan if the 90 percent is exact.

Trials of glucomannan used much more, typically in grams a day, split before meals; the abstracts we read do not list a single dose, so we make no direct comparison 1. What we can say is that 50 mg is a very small amount of fiber. It is far less than the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole-grain bread, so any effect from it alone is hard to imagine.

Evidence03

Does konjac fiber (glucomannan) help with weight? What does the research show?

NIH ODS says glucomannan has little to no effect on weight loss 2. The pooled reviews agree that any difference is small.

One review of nine trials found -0.22 kg against placebo, not statistically significant 1. Another, of 14 studies, found -0.79 kg, along with lower cholesterol and fasting glucose, with weaker results in some groups 3. A network review found -1.27 kg, which did not meet the authors' bar for clinical significance, 2.5 kg or more 4. Adverse events included belly discomfort, diarrhea and constipation.

Safety04

Is konjac fiber (glucomannan) safe? What should you watch for?

The main safety point is water. A case report says glucomannan expands rapidly to many times its size and lists obstruction among reported harms 5.

NIH ODS also says weight-loss supplements can have harmful effects and interact with medicines 2. Take the capsule with a full glass of water, sit upright and never take it dry or lying down. Do not take it if you have a narrowed food pipe, a past blockage or trouble swallowing without your doctor's advice. Call 911 if you cannot breathe or swallow saliva.

A glass of water with the fiber

Each capsule holds 50 mg of konjac fiber (90% glucomannan). Glucomannan holds a lot of water and swells to many times its dry size 5. So take the capsule with a full glass of water, sit upright, and do not take it dry or lying down.

The label names no amount of water. Fifty milligrams is a small amount of fiber, and we found no source on this exact amount; the full-glass habit is a precaution, not a label rule. Ask your pharmacist whether fiber can change how or when a medicine you take should be swallowed.

Marketing05

Why is konjac fiber (glucomannan) sold in weight and wellness products?

Konjac is sold for fullness because a thick gel in the stomach slows emptying, and that sounds like a way to eat less.

The logic is neat, and the trials are what count. They show small differences in weight at gram doses, and NIH calls the effect little to none. A capsule with 50 mg is a tiny dose by those standards. Because fiber is healthy in food, a fiber supplement borrows a halo it may not deserve. Whole foods with fiber come with vitamins and water, which a capsule lacks.

What does konjac fiber (glucomannan) add to Trimoryn, and what does it not?

Konjac is the line most tied to the idea of fullness, and also the line that needs the most care.

It is why we built a water card into this site. It adds a small amount of fiber, a safety duty and the label's own timing advice, 15 to 30 minutes before a meal, which fits a fiber that needs time to meet water. It does not add a weight effect we can show, and the amount is a small fraction of studied doses.

Compared07

Where does konjac fiber (glucomannan) sit among the other Trimoryn lines?

Each Trimoryn line has its own printed amount, so you can see how konjac fiber (glucomannan) compares in weight with the rest.

Bars are drawn to the largest milligram line, 100 mg. Hover or focus a row to light it. Probiotic bars are symbolic, since CFU is a count of bacteria and not a weight. Weight on the panel is not the same as importance, and a small line can matter more for safety than a large one.

Bars are drawn to the largest milligram line (100 mg). The probiotic bars are symbolic: CFU is a count of bacteria, not a weight, and the label does not say whether the count is at manufacture or at expiry.

Ask first08

What should you ask before taking konjac fiber (glucomannan)?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether fiber and swelling are a problem for you, and whether it changes the timing of your medicines.

  • Do I have any swallowing or gut narrowing that makes a swelling fiber risky?
  • Should I take my other medicines at a different time?
  • Do I already take a fiber product?

FAQ09

Trimoryn questions people ask

Is glucomannan the same as konjac?

Glucomannan is the main fiber in the konjac root. The label says Konjac Fiber (90% glucomannan).

How much water should I drink with konjac fiber?

The label names no amount. We suggest a full glass and sitting upright, and never dry or lying down.

Can konjac cause choking?

A case report describes obstruction when glucomannan expanded rapidly. The risk is mostly with larger doses and little water, but the precaution is simple.

Does konjac change weight?

NIH ODS says little to no effect. Pooled results ranged from -0.22 kg, not significant, to -1.27 kg, below the authors' threshold for clinical significance.

How much glucomannan did the studies use?

The abstracts we read do not give one dose, so we cannot compare them to 50 mg. Studies often used grams, so 50 mg is small.

Does konjac affect medicines?

Fiber can change how or when a medicine should be taken. Ask your pharmacist.
