Alpha lipoic acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid in Trimoryn: 25 mg, a Small Weight Finding and a Blood Sugar Warning
Alpha lipoic acid, or ALA, is 25 mg of each Trimoryn capsule. A pooled review found about 1.3 kg more weight loss than placebo in short trials, which the authors called small and short term. MSK warns that ALA can lower blood sugar, so tell your provider if you take diabetes medicine.

The ingredient01
What is alpha lipoic acid?
Alpha lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing compound that the body makes and uses in energy production, and it is also sold as a supplement.
Small amounts are found in foods such as spinach and red meat. As a supplement it has a long history of use for nerve and sugar-related concerns, and for general antioxidant claims. On the label it appears as "Alpha Lipoic Acid 25 mg", with no form named. Some products use the R form, which the body makes, and some a mix, and the label does not say.
Dose02
How much alpha lipoic acid is in one Trimoryn capsule?
One capsule holds 25 mg of alpha lipoic acid. That is a quarter of the weight of each of the 100 mg plant lines.
The pooled review found no significant effect of dose, and its trials commonly used several hundred milligrams a day 1. We cannot give a single studied dose from the abstract, but 25 mg is at the low end of what supplements sell. That small amount may also mean a small risk for blood sugar, but we cannot say so with confidence. Treat the caution as real until your clinician tells you otherwise.

| Name on the label | Alpha Lipoic Acid |
|---|---|
| What it is | An antioxidant the body makes in small amounts |
| Amount per capsule | 25 mg |
| Amount used in research | Pooled trials: about 1.3 kg more weight loss than placebo, short term |
| Strength of evidence | Small, short-term difference; MSK: preliminary |
| Marketed or traditional use | Sold for energy and blood sugar |
| Main caution | Can lower blood sugar; talk to your provider if you take diabetes medicines (MSK). |
Evidence03
Does alpha lipoic acid help with weight? What does the research show?
A pooled review found that alpha lipoic acid coincided with 1.27 kg more weight loss than placebo, and a BMI difference of -0.43 kg per square meter 1.
The authors called it small, short-term weight loss and said further research is needed. The result was real in the pooled average, but trials were short, and an average hides who gained and who did not. MSK describes the evidence as preliminary 2. We have no data on 25 mg a day, on the combination with the other lines or on weight kept off for a year.
| Item | Finding |
|---|---|
| Weight vs placebo | -1.27 kg more (95% CI 0.25 to 2.29) |
| BMI difference | -0.43 kg per square meter |
| Dose effect | None significant |
| Authors' verdict | Small, short term; more research needed |
Safety04
Is alpha lipoic acid safe? What should you watch for?
The main caution is blood sugar. MSK says alpha lipoic acid lowers blood sugar, so talk to your provider if you take diabetes drugs 2.
Side effects can include nausea, vomiting and low blood sugar. In people predisposed to it, ALA has been linked to an autoimmune syndrome that causes low blood sugar, and it may work against some chemotherapy. The signs of low blood sugar are shakiness, sweating, hunger, confusion and faintness. Treat severe ones as an emergency, and tell your clinician about any episode. Do not stop or change diabetes medicine on your own.
Marketing05
Why is alpha lipoic acid sold in weight and wellness products?
ALA is sold as a universal antioxidant for energy, nerves and blood sugar, so it fits a "metabolism" story.
It has one of the better weight findings of the Trimoryn lines, and marketers know it. The finding is small and short, and the doses were bigger than the label. If an ad says ALA speeds up your metabolism, note that no source we read says so. A coincident 1.3 kg in a short trial is a modest number, not a fat-burning claim.

What does alpha lipoic acid add to Trimoryn, and what does it not?
ALA adds the strongest single weight signal on the panel, and the most important blood-sugar caution.
Those two facts travel together. If you take diabetes medicine, this is the line to ask about first. If you do not, it is a small amount of a compound with a small pooled weight signal at higher doses. Neither fact tells you what the whole capsule does, because no study tested the whole capsule.

Where does alpha lipoic acid sit among the other Trimoryn lines?
Each Trimoryn line has its own printed amount, so you can see how alpha lipoic acid compares in weight with the rest.
Bars are drawn to the largest milligram line, 100 mg. Hover or focus a row to light it. Probiotic bars are symbolic, since CFU is a count of bacteria and not a weight. Weight on the panel is not the same as importance, and a small line can matter more for safety than a large one.

Ask first08
What should you ask before taking alpha lipoic acid?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether alpha lipoic acid is safe with your diabetes medicine and how to watch your blood sugar.
- Could this lower my blood sugar too far with my medicine?
- What symptoms should make me call?
- Does it matter that I also use cinnamon or berberine?
