Cassia, Ceylon and Coumarin: Why the Cinnamon Type Matters
Trimoryn lists 100 mg of cinnamon bark extract 10:1 and does not name the type. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, and liver effects have been reported. Ceylon has only trace amounts. We cannot say which one is in the capsule. People with liver disease should ask a doctor first.

Types01
What is the difference between cassia and Ceylon?
They are two kinds of cinnamon from different trees. Cassia is cheaper and more common. Ceylon is milder.
The NCCIH says cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, that some cassia products have high levels, and that Ceylon has only trace coumarin 1. A label that says only cinnamon leaves the type open, which is why the missing word matters.
| Point | Cassia | Ceylon |
|---|---|---|
| Coumarin | Present; some products high | Trace only |
| Liver reports | Interactions reported | Not a main concern at trace levels |
| Named on the Trimoryn label | No | No |
Label02
Which one is in Trimoryn?
We cannot say. The label reads cinnamon bark extract 10:1, 100 mg, with no type.
The ratio means about ten parts of bark went into one part of extract, so 100 mg stands for roughly 1,000 mg of bark. We do not know how much coumarin that holds, because the label does not state the type and no test result is printed. If it matters to you, ask the seller in writing which cinnamon is used and whether coumarin has been tested. See the cinnamon page.
Liver03
Why does coumarin raise a liver question?
Because liver interactions with coumarin have been reported, mostly with high intake over time.
The NCCIH notes that long use could be an issue for sensitive people, such as those with liver disease 1. It also says research does not clearly support cinnamon for any health condition, including weight. MSK adds that evidence on blood sugar and blood fats is promising but needs larger trials 2. A single capsule a day is a modest amount, but the cinnamon you eat in food adds to it, as do other products that list cinnamon. Add them up if you have a liver condition, and let your doctor set the limit that fits you.

Who should ask a doctor first?
Anyone with liver disease, anyone on medicine that affects the liver, and anyone on diabetes drugs.
- Liver disease or abnormal liver tests
- Medicines that stress the liver, ask a pharmacist
- Diabetes medicine, since cinnamon touches blood sugar
- Pregnant, nursing or under 18, as the label says not for you
Tell your doctor about all supplements. Stop and call a doctor for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or strong belly pain. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Report problems to FDA MedWatch, 1-888-463-6332. A blood test your doctor orders is the only way to check how your liver is doing.

What should you do before you order?
Ask the seller which cinnamon it is, then ask your pharmacist about your liver and medicines.
The checkout shows the total before you pay. If the seller cannot say which cinnamon is used, that is useful to know before you decide.

FAQ06
Trimoryn questions people ask
Is cassia cinnamon bad for the liver?
Cassia contains coumarin, and liver interactions have been reported. People with liver disease should ask a doctor first.
Why does the cinnamon type matter in a capsule?
Cassia holds coumarin, and Ceylon only traces. With no type named, you cannot judge the coumarin you take in.
How can I tell if my cinnamon is Ceylon or cassia?
Read the label for the type or Latin name. If it only says cinnamon, ask the seller in writing.
